Southwest Property Awards

Sunnyside Mall: Landmark projects for Southwest include the redevelopment of Sunnyside Mall in Bedford, NS, which distinguished itself as the only Canadian shopping centre to twice win the prestigious Maple Leaf Award in 1992 and 1998 for best renovation and/or expansion of a shopping centre of its size in Canada.

Windmill Crossing: Southwest received the Eco-Efficiency Award for its transformation of the former Moosehead Brewery. In 2002, The Eco-Efficiency Centre recognized Southwest and Office Interiors Group for an ambitious project to renovate and rejuvenate a former Moosehead Brewery building into an office environment. The Windmill Crossing project resulted in significant environmental and energy cost savings and is an example of what can be done when landlord and tenant are of one mind.

Bishop’s Landing: Bishop’s Landing, completed in 2001, was the first significant mixed-use and multi-unit development along the Halifax waterfront and gained international recognition as the winner of the Waterfront Centre of Washington, DC’s 2002 Excellence on the Waterfront Award for “Best Mixed Use Project” amid a contingent of 70 international submissions.

In 2004, Bishop's Landing swept the Halifax Urban Design Awards receiving first prize in the building category, honourable mention in the open space category, and the coveted People's Choice award. The HRM Capital District Urban Design Awards celebrate design excellence in urban spaces.

Company Awards

The Best Places to Work Program: The Best Places to Work program recognizes organizations that demonstrate best practices in Atlantic Canada. Progress Magazine partnered with Best Companies Group in an effort to offer regional organizations the opportunity to elevate their workplaces. In 2010, Southwest was honoured to be ranked within the top 30. Organizations chose to complete an extensive two-part survey, including an organizational overview of the company’s policies and procedures as well as an in-depth employee questionnaire. Best Companies Group and ModernThink LLC, a research and consulting firm specializing in workplace excellence, conducted the survey, analysis, and ranking.

Top 101 Companies in Atlantic Canada: Southwest was amongst the Top 101 Companies in Atlantic Canada in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Maritime Business Ethics Awards:  Southwest was proud to be recipient of the 2008 Maritime Better Business Ethics Award for companies with 51-100 employees. This award recognizes Southwest's continued demonstration of ethical and value based business practices. The Better Business Bureau gathers and provides reliable data that allows consumers to do business with companies they know are ethical and trustworthy.  In 2006 and 2007 Southwest Properties received recognition by being a finalist  at the Annual Maritime Business Ethics Awards.

Fastest Growing Companies:  2010 marks the first year that Southwest has made this prestigious list presented by Progress Magazine.

Employee Awards

Atlantic Business Magazine's Top 50 CEO Awards:  Jim Spatz was recognized as one of Atlantic Canada's Top 50 CEO's for the last five years.  In 2010 he was entered into the Top 50 Hall of Fame for being on the list for five consecutive years!

Atlantic Canadian Entrepreneur of the Year Award: In 2002, the company’s Chairman and CEO Jim Spatz was recognized in his field and honoured to receive the Atlantic Canadian Entrepreneur of the Year award for real estate and construction.

NS Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame: Simon Spatz and Jim Spatz were inducted into the Junior Achievement Nova Scotia Business Hall of Fame in 2007. The Nova Scotia Business Hall of Fame was established by Junior Achievement in 1993 to recognize the achievements of business leaders in our province and to inspire the young people whom JA works with.

Les Clefs d’Or Key Designation: Scott Layton received a Key designation with Les Clefs d’Or, an association of professional Hotel Concierge across Canada. Scott joins a prestigious group of concierges who demonstrate high professional and ethical standards and is the first person outside the hotel industry to receive this honour in Canada.
